The Hows and Whys of Wedding Cake Toppers

by Sue Toliver

What do they call those little statues or figures that sit on top of a wedding cake? Do you know? They are called ” Wedding Cake Toppers “, and they have become somewhat of a tradition in this world in which we live. There is an incredible variety of toppers on the consumer market today. Let’s spend a little while learning the story of the “topper”.

Let’s start off with a formal description. A wedding cake topper is a small statue, figure or model that sits on top of a wedding cake. Usually made out of plastic, it usually depicts the bride and groom in their formal wedding attire…taking their vows on that special day…

No discussion of toppers, or anything for that matter, would be the same without a bit of history on the subject. So, we have no exact records of the first time someone put a figure on top of a wedding cake. We do have traditions. One of the most popular traditions goes something like this. A girl was getting married to the love of her life. She wanted the world to know that she loved him, and asked her father the baker to help her out. He thought and thought and came up with the ideal solution. He would bake a wedding cake, but he would add a little something special to the top…a model. This model would be of his daughter and her new husband. It was to depict the love that they shared for each other as they started their new life together.

Perhaps just a story but it does foreshadow the prominence that cake toppers were about to take. Surely this humble baker didn’t realize what a tradition he was about to start? The world would never be the same again.

When you think of the 1950’s what do you think? Elvis and Rock & Roll right? Well wedding cake toppers were to become more popular than ever during this decade as those returning from the war started to settle down and raise families.

Today we see that the toppers are as popular as ever. They have changed somewhat to reflect the times, but they are popular none-the-less. Today you can get toppers that depict mixed race marriages, and same-sex marriages as well. Many humorous wedding toppers are being sold these days. One depicts the bride grabbing her groom by the collar…preventing him from running away from the altar. Another shows her dragging him back to the altar after he has made his getaway. Some toppers even depict the various hobbies that the happy couple can enjoy together.
